Errors In Use Of Nouns
Nouns which are used in singular form :-
(1)Scenery,information,furniture,advice,machinery,stationery,news,poetry,business,mischief,fuel,
issue,repair,bedding.Examples :- the scenery of this place is worth seeing.
He has received no information so far.
(2) Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Classics, Ethics, Athletics, innings, gallows.
Examples :- Economics is a very interesting subject.
The Indian team defeated the Australian by an innings.
(3) Brick, bread, fruit, word ( as 'promise')
Examples :- Let me buy some fruit.
He is true to his word.
(4) Words like dozen, score, hundred, thousands, million when preceded by a numeral.
Examples :- He bought ten dozen oranges.
I have four pair of shoes.
(5) Expressions as a ten-rupee note, a two-hour journey, a four-mile walk, a five-year plan,
a six-man committe etc.
Examples :- A ten-rupee note is lying there.
Nouns used only in plural form
(1) Cattle, police, poultry, people, gentry, peasantry, artillery.
Examples :- Cattle are grazing in the field.
(2) Scissors, trousers, stockings, spectacles, shorts, alms, remains, riches, goods, measles.
Examples :- My scissors are very sharp.
My spectacles are missing.
